The Oakleaf Hydrangea, or Hydrangea quercifolia, is an exquisite heirloom shrub native to the Southeastern United States, celebrated for its stunning, season-long visual interest. Growing up to 7 ft tall, this deciduous shrub features an open crown with shoots emerging from underground stolons, often forming expansive colonies. Its distinct, lobed foliage resembles oak leaves, presenting a yellowish-green top and a downy-white underside.
In early summer, the plant blooms with erect clusters of white flowers that transition from creamy white to pink and finally to a rustic, papery rusty-brown as they age. Come fall, the leaves transform into vivid reds, bronzes, and purples, offering a striking display that persists through winter. Thriving in moist, acidic organic soils under partial shade or full sun, the Oakleaf Hydrangea is a versatile choice for natural or landscaped woodlands and a cornerstone in garden design for its unmatched beauty and textural appeal.
