Clove fragrance permeates these heirloom carnations with 1 1/2- 2 inch blooms. There are multi-hued varieties in shades of rose, pink, wine, salmon, cream, and white. The foliage is grassy, gray or blue-green, and blooms from late July to August. This is a good cut-flower variety grown as an annual. Chabaud is an old-fashioned type dating back to as early as 1904. D. caryophyllus is native to the Mediterranean, where emotional attachment to this flower first took root. Also known as annual carnation. The word chabaud is pronounced shab-o, with a long "o."

Planting Instructions:
Direct sow the seed after the last spring frost, planting it just below the surface and compacting the soil slightly. To start the seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost of spring, sow just below the surface of a flat; compress the soil slightly and keep it consistently moist. Keep the temperature at 60 degrees F until germination, which should take place within 14-20 days. Thin or transplant the seedlings.
