Cultivate your own tea leaves with the Camellia sinensis, the very plant that provides the world's most popular beverage. This evergreen shrub, capable of growing to a height of 6 feet or more if left untrimmed, yields leaves that can be processed into green, black, and white tea, offering a delightful and caffeinated homebrew. Specifically, the young leaves are used for green tea, the mature leaves for oolong and black teas, and the delicate buds for white teas. Its glossy, dark green leaves and occasional white, fragrant flowers add an ornamental touch to your garden or patio.
Germination rate: 91%
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
For best results, scarify the seeds by gently nicking the seed coat. Soak the seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours. Sow the seeds 1/2 inch deep in a well-draining, acidic potting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Provide a warm, humid environment with indirect sunlight. Germination can be slow and may take several weeks to months. Transplant seedlings into larger containers or outdoors (in suitable climates) once they have developed several sets of true leaves. Tea plants prefer partial shade and acidic, well-draining soil.
