The Cherry Plum, also known as the Myrobalan Plum, is a delightful ornamental tree that offers a bounty of beauty and flavor. Growing to a height of 15-30 feet, this heirloom variety boasts fragrant white flowers that bloom in early spring, creating a stunning display against its reddish-purple foliage. The edible fruits, which ripen in mid-summer, are small and tart, perfect for jams, jellies, and preserves. The Cherry Plum is also a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts, thanks to its manageable size and attractive bark. Wildlife whether it is pollinators, birds, owls, etc. absolutely love these trees. Interestingly, while they are a cross between a sand cherry and Japanese plum, this occurred naturally and they are generally considered heirlooms as a result since they weren't intentionally crossbred.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
For best results, cold stratify seeds for 120 days before sowing. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours, then mix with moist sand or peat moss and store in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. After stratification, sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist and provide a warm, bright location. Germination may take several weeks. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, choosing a location with full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Seeds can also be sown in late fall directly outdoors for a spring germination.
