The Carolina Azalea, or Rhododendron carolinianum, is a prized heirloom flowering shrub known for its classic pink and purple blooms. This small, delicate plant forms a rounded mound, showcasing its evergreen foliage and stunning 3" flowers in May. Each variation, from pink to purple, depends on the specific strain, offering a delightful splash of color to any garden. To thrive, the Carolina Azalea requires acidic soil with good drainage and varying degrees of shade—lighter in the North and denser in the South. Adding this plant to your garden not only brings a touch of glamour but also enhances biodiversity with its vibrant blooms.

*Rhododendron seeds have a naturally low germination rate of about 40%. Best practice is to double up your sowing efforts to put the odds in your favor.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Use a sterile seed starting mix. Light is required for germination, so surface sow thinly. Mist water and do not allow to dry out which is often fatal to seeds and is the cause of most germination failures. Cover the container or pot in a plastic bag to create a humid environment. Place in full sun or under grow lamp. You can remove plastic bag once seedlings emerge, but keeping it can help weaker seedlings develop. After the seedlings have their 2nd set of leaves (true leaves), GENTLY transplant into individual pots. Fertilize every 3-4 weeks until the size of a small plant. Harden off before transplanting outdoors. Keep evenly moist through the first growing season.
